As a North Carolina educator, you’ve dedicated your life to helping others. But when it comes to your own legacy, have you taken the right steps to protect it?
One of the most overlooked—but critical—parts of retirement planning is keeping your estate plan updated. Too often, teachers create a will or name beneficiaries early in their career… and then forget about it. The result? Outdated documents, unintended heirs, and legal headaches for the loved ones left behind.
Life changes. Your estate plan should, too.
Over the years, you may have:
Gotten married or divorced
Had children or grandchildren
Changed careers or retired
Purchased property or inherited assets
Moved to a different state
Each of these milestones should trigger a review of your estate plan. If not, you could unknowingly leave your assets to the wrong person—or create confusion that leads to expensive legal battles among family members.
Here are just a few of the common risks we see when estate plans aren’t kept current:
Outdated Beneficiaries – Your retirement accounts or life insurance could still list an ex-spouse. These designations override your will, which means your assets might end up in the wrong hands.
Guardianship Gaps – If you haven’t legally named a guardian for your minor children, the court will decide who takes care of them.
Tax Inefficiencies – Tax laws change. What was once a smart estate plan might now leave your heirs with a larger tax burden than necessary.
Healthcare & Legal Decisions – If your power of attorney or healthcare proxy is outdated, you may have someone making critical decisions for you who no longer reflects your wishes.
To make your estate plan work for you—today and tomorrow—be sure to:
✅ Review your documents every 3–5 years
✅ Update beneficiaries on all retirement accounts and insurance policies
✅ Revise your will and power of attorney after major life changes
✅ Ensure guardianship designations are current
✅ Work with a trusted advisor to align your plan with current tax laws
